Scarlett reaches for the door handle, but I jerk her away from it. “Remember, Scarlett. This is a temporary setback. You’ll return to me in a couple of days once the heat has died down.”

She looks me in the eyes, and I can see the happiness in them ever since I told her she could go back to her mom’s. I haven’t seen her that happy since I met her. “Of course, no problem.”

Scarlett tries to move again, but I can’t let her go that easily.

“Where’s my goodbye kiss, baby girl?”

Her cheeks stain a deep pink as she leans toward me and presses her lips tentatively to mine. I pull her close and deepen the kiss, knowing that no amount of time with her in my arms will be enough.

Once I finally allow her to break away, we’re both panting for air. “I’ll miss doing that for the next couple of days.”

She nods. “Me too.”

There’s a palpable need in the air sparking between us. A need that makes me want to tell Mick to take a hike while I fuck her right here in the back of the car in broad daylight. I manage to keep in control and let her hand go. “I’ll be in touch when you can return to me.”

She nods and reaches for the door. This time I allow her to get out and leave. It hurts me more than I explain to watch her walk into that apartment block and away from me, even if it’s temporary.

There’s an unspoken question lying between us that clouds our every moment together in tension.

When will I let her go permanently?

Officially, I’ve already taken what I paid for before I intended to. Scarlett could demand that I release her since I’ve taken her virginity, but she hasn’t. Although, there was nothing official about the illegal auction we participated in.

A part of me never wants to let her go. I can’t believe my second in command got caught up in a botched attempt to cut off Milo’s laundering operations. Mazzeo knew where we were going to be and when. It means there’s a mole in our clan. A mole that I need to weed out fast.

Niall will live, according to Seamus, but he’s sustained pretty bad injuries, which will put him out of work for a month at least. I need him now more than ever, which means I need to take a look at my guys and work out who I can trust. Seamus is a decent guy and loyal, but I can’t trust him to step into Niall’s shoes. He doesn’t have the intelligence to help me run things.

Aiden is my next best guy after Niall. He’s been in the clan for almost as long as Niall. I’m certain he wouldn’t betray me. It has to be one of the lower-level clan members. The journey from central Boston to my home in Beacon Hills is longer than normal because the traffic is hectic. Trust the traffic to be like this when there’s a fucking emergency I need to deal with.
